The assertion is that getting to your desired goal is not so much about the action as it is about the attitude.

The premise is that attitude comes before action, and when you have a good attitude you attract more good into your life and when you have a negative attitude you attract more negativity.

You've no doubt experienced the law of attraction in your own life. You are in an extremely good mood and you also get a promotion. You wake up on the wrong side of the bed and end up having a fender bender. Here are four ways to improve your business results based on the law of attraction.

Focus on what you want. The law of attraction states that what you focus on expands. If you observe others you notice that most people focus on what they do not want. "I don't want to argue, I don't want to waste time, and I don't want to have regrets." The way to change the focus is through the power of words. Instead of saying "I don't want to argue" say "I want to get along." Instead of saying I don't want to waste time, say," I want to use time effectively" and instead of saying "I don't want to have regrets," say "I want to be conscientious about my choices." Using these principles can enhance teamwork, improve productivity and take your business to the next level.

Build rewarding work relationships. In my graduate work I conducted surveys where I asked the question "What would improve productivity at work?" Across the board the answer was "better working relationships."

We discover who we are through our relationships, and relationships always have something to teach us. You can run from the lesson but you can't hide. For example, if you transfer to another department to get away from the lazy co-worker who takes advantage of you, eventually you get to work with another lazy co-worker who takes advantage of you. Perhaps the co-worker is there to teach you about setting boundaries, teamwork and speaking your truth.

If you can't retain your employees even though you pay a decent wage and have benefits, chances are it's a relationship problem. If you keep firing employees because they don't measure up, it's time to offer some training, prepare an employee handbook or hire a HR manager. We are who we are because of relationships and relationships can only be effective if they are mutually rewarding.

Manage your energy. In their book, The Power of Full Engagement, authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz suggest that the key to high performance and personal renewal is managing energy and not time.

Most of us have forgotten the importance of renewal and regeneration. We try to get more done by skipping lunch, getting less sleep and talking on the phone while driving. Then we end up feeling drained and resort to more energy drains such as gossip, bickering and complaining.

Your car can't run without fuel and a tune up and neither can you. Maybe all you need to manage your energy is a healthy dose of laughter and a good nap.

Become your own best friend. Let me guess: you often feel guilty, you have a hard time saying "no," you juggle way too many responsibilities and you are hard on yourself.

The reason I know is because much of 2006 was spent conducting surveys where between 60 and 80 percent of survey respondents answered yes to the first four statements.

If you want to start being a better friend to you, here are some suggestions...

1. Stop the guilt trip. Guilt is nothing but judgment about something you should have done or should be doing. Either clean up your act, or become happy with your current decisions. Anything else is madness.

2. Be true to yourself. Quit betraying yourself by saying "Yes" when you need to say "no." Your attitude will improve because you'll be less resentful of others and you'll be taking responsibility instead of trying to be a people pleaser.

3. Respect others enough to make them pull their weight. Have the integrity to speak to them about the situation and be prepared to deal with excessive pouting on their part as they try to convince you to revert back to old patterns.

4. Be kind to yourself. You can't give to others what you can't give to yourself.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Marlene Chism works with companies that want to stop the drama so that teamwork and productivity can thrive. Yet to this day not many people understand its profundity. To someone who might not be familiar with the concept of manifestation, it seems like a nonsensical statement - even absurd! But to a success conscious individual, it is a powerful statement and within it contains life's most precious secret.
The Law of Attraction secrets boil down to one thing: thought.
Everything begins with thought. The Wright brothers had a thought about making flying a reality. Soon enough it became a reality for them and we are the beneficiaries. Donald Trump had a thought of being rich which led him to the right people, right opportunities that helped him along the way and he became rich. Bill Gates had an idea (thought) about making the computer easy to operate and accessible to everyone. His thought manifested.
These men (and women) and many other successful individuals understand the most fundamental law: the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction states that similar things attract to one another, thus, the saying "birds of a feather flock together." If everything begins with thought and the Law of Attraction plays a big role in manifesting the thought, then it can be illustrated as follows:
A thought (attracts) other similar thoughts (attract) other people of similar thoughts (attract) circumstances that are in harmony with those thoughts (lead to) the thing desired by those thoughts expressed in physical form
At the level of thought "things" are nothing but random energy waiting to be "assembled". Yet they are as real as electricity. We can't see electricity, but we know beyond shadows of a doubt that it exists. We also know that thoughts are real because everything that has ever been invented or created in our physical world began with a thought. The manifestation of the "thing" from the invisible plane into our physical world is enabled by the persistence of thought. This is the essence of the law of attraction secrets.
Scientists teach us that the whole universe is made of energy. Energy has frequencies. Thoughts are energy in its primitive stage. Thought energies radiate frequencies just as radio antennas radiate frequencies. The level of thought frequency determines the kind of physical manifestation and circumstance that we have; low thought frequencies correspond to the physical expression of similar frequencies while high thought frequencies correspond to things, people, or circumstance of similar frequencies.
The key to keep in mind is that thoughts are as real as any physical thing. You must be completely convinced that it is as just as you are convinced that the earth is round. Hold your thoughts long enough and in time you'll see them manifest in your reality.
So go head. Think yourself into riches, a new home, a new car, an opulent lifestyle, happiness, meaningful relationships, and peace of mind...whatever you desire.
You're limited to the kind of thoughts you hold in your mind. The Law of Attraction secrets is not something new. It's inherent in all of us. All you need to do is check your thoughts.
Manifest a great life!
What do you want to manifest in your life, a new car, a new home, meaningful relationship? We are happy to have you as a member of the ProfessionalOrganizers.Community.
SOLUTIONS is a publication produced periodically throughout the year that focuses on operating a successful professional organizing business.
This issue features...
1. Introduction
2. Outlook Express vs. Outlook ~ Which should you choose?
3. Continuing Education Webinars
4. Let Technology Work for You
5. Administration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Introduction

Now that the children are settled back in school, it comes to mind that we, too, need to turn our minds to further education. Our clients are becoming far more sophisticated and are looking for solutions and systems that go beyond the scope of many organizers. With the advent of so much technology, a Professional Organizer needs to be knowledgeable about so much in order to stay ahead of the competition, even in the residential market.

It has never been easier to attend great educational classes as it relates to the field of organizing. All of the associations (POC, NAPO & NSGCD) are offering numerous teleseminars to help you gain a better understanding of the area of your choice.

As you will see below, Productivity Squared has launched their new webinar training series and we're thrilled to announce that participants comments are very encouraging and it resonated loudly through their comments that it was a thrill to attend a session and not have to dress up...

New technology has made it possible to offer these education programs through the internet ~ which means that you do not pay for long distance lines. You listen and watch a live webinar ~ complete with PowerPoint presentation and you have the ability to chat using an instant messaging feature ~ all from the comfort of your home.

As technology does play a large part in running an organizing business, we have focused on Microsoft Outlook in this issue, the contact database manager of our choice. (We chose to work with a software program that a huge majority of our clients were using.) We want to do our best to help you get the most of the tools you probably have right on your PC.

Yours in organizing,

Debra

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Outlook Express vs. Outlook – Which should you choose? by Dave Paradi
Most PC’s today come with Microsoft’s Outlook Express e-mail software pre-loaded and configured for use right away, so many people start using it as their default e-mail program. But the Microsoft Office suite that many people use contains Outlook, another program that manages e-mail. Which one should you use?
In general, the free Outlook Express should be used for home use and Outlook should be used for business use, from home based business to larger enterprises. Here are four reasons for my suggestion.
Outlook has more applications built-in
The Outlook Express software is really an e-mail package. It will allow you to keep an address book, but it is not robust enough to be a true contact management software tool. The Outlook package is designed as a Personal Information Management (PIM) tool. It contains the e-mail functionality, as well as a full contact application, task list and calendar. All of these tools are integrated with each other, making them easier to use together. For example, you can schedule a meeting with someone else and it will update your calendar and send an e-mail to that person notifying them of the request for a meeting.
Outlook can synchronize better with a Handheld device
Many mobile professionals are now carrying a mobile computing device, whether it is a Palm, Handspring Visor or Pocket PC. To avoid double entry and overwriting of data, it is critical that your mobile device synchronizes your data with your computer. Most synchronization tools are built for Outlook but not Outlook Express because many people rely on the calendar, contacts and task list data more than the e-mail data. It also allows Outlook to function as the primary data source so that if you lose the data on your handheld (which has happened to me), you have an original source.
Outlook has a more robust E-mail feature
While both packages will handle basic e-mail functions, Outlook is more robust than Outlook Express. For example, Outlook contains such features as the ability to send a message at a specific time in the future, allows more complex e-mail signatures (which can be a great marketing tool) and allows you to set up more complex e-mail rules that can help deal with the barrage of e-mail we all get on a daily basis.
Outlook offers more MAPI compliant features
MAPI stands for Messaging Application Program Interface and it is the way that other programs interface with the e-mail application to offer new features. Outlook Express offers basic MAPI features where you have the ability to send e-mail from an application such as Word or Excel. Outlook extends the functionality and allows you to do things such as mail-merge to e-mail so you can create personalized e-mails to a group of people using the mail-merge features of Word.
If you want to see a full comparison of the two products, go to this Word document that Microsoft has on their web site:http://www.microsoft.com/office/outlook/evaluation/compare.doc
When you get your new PC pre-loaded with Microsoft Outlook Express, consider these points before you go ahead and set it up as the default e-mail application.
~~~~~~~~~

© 2006 Dave Paradi ~ Dave Paradi helps people avoid “Death by PowerPoint” and other electronic sins. Let Technology Work for You ~ by Debra Milne

Do you ever wonder how anyone accomplished anything before today’s technology was introduced? How could anyone be productive without computers, cell phones, and PDA’s? Work did get done, but at a much slower pace.

Quite simply, technology has changed the face, and the pace, of information distribution and the way we conduct our day-to-day lives. Not only has it changed how we do business, it has also had a profound effect on our personal lives.

With technology so prominent today, it would seem logical that it offer some of the best solutions to problems associated with increased workloads and the complexity of life. Equipped with the right system, you can let technology work for you, strategically managing activities and tasks, as well as ensuring your goals and objectives are attained. While there are a number of programs available, we focus specifically on Microsoft Outlook®.

Outlook was designed to make organizing your daily information almost automatic. It pulls together everything you need to know about your daily tasks, appointments, e-mail messages, and other details. It can act as your assistant in dealing with the flurry of small but important items.

Using containers such as Calendar, Contacts, E-Mail, Notes, and Tasks, Outlook becomes a highly functional organizing system. As the backbone of any organizing system, these containers provide the necessary homes for the items you need to process and manage your life efficiently.
Before you utilize these containers, you need to simplify your decision-making process. When faced with new information, you must apply The Principle of A.R.T.© and decide whether you need to act on it, record it or toss it.

Act ~ Can it be handled now? Do I have enough time? Do I have enough energy? As a general rule, if it can be handled quickly, do it.

Record ~ If you determine that an item cannot be handled immediately, then you must enter it into your system.

Toss ~ Items that do not enhance your life and have no value can be immediately tossed!

Tasks is an action container for you to record activities you need to do to bring items closer to completion. Think of it as your “to do” list. Many times these lists remain exactly that, things that you still need to do. These lists often fail because they do not identify the next activity that needs to be done to bring it closer to completion. As such, they remain on the “to-do” list far too long. Failing to identify the next activity invites procrastination. Since most lists represent only partial reminders, they cause us to review information more than once before deciding what to do with it.

The best practice for recording your task is to preface each entry with its appropriate next activity. Many of the tasks you perform are similar in preparation and completion. Preface each item with the required activity type and similar tasks will be clustered together, allowing you to maintain focus and efficiency.

Your Task list should include the following activity types: Call, Pay, Read, Errand, Pending, Research, File, Plan and Write.

Notes are the electronic equivalent of the sticky paper notes and are a freeform recording tool. While not a lot of functionality has been given to this section, Notes are a perfect area for collecting and organizing reference and checklists. They can be sorted and accessed as needed. Notes are not connected to a reminder system, have no scrolling function and have limited display settings, but they function exceedingly well at managing lists.

To increase personal productivity and the speed at which you achieve your objectives, your goal should be to work towards an empty e-mail Inbox. For the most part, it is best to think of your e-mail system as a communication tool and your inbox as a temporary resting ground for items needing your attention.

You can create a proper storage area for each e-mail you need to retain by creating, and using folders and sub-folders under your Inbox. E-mail folders are either Action folders or Reference folders. Action folders contain items that still require your attention, while Reference folders contain items that you feel need to be kept for future use.

It must be easy for you to record things automatically when dealing with information. It must be easy for you to turn to your system every time you pick up the phone, send an e-mail, or get ready to go to a meeting. It must become second nature. You need to be able to work as fast as you think.

Make it a habit to review your system often. Prepare yourself for tomorrow, and allow your mind to be free. A modest investment in time learning how to use these tools efficiently will bring immediate results. Become more productive today ~ let technology work for you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5. However, it is wise to take time to prepare your children as the new school year descends upon us. A familiar routine will get the school year off to a great start.
Re-establish regular routines
Routines and rituals help define your days, structure your time and provide a sense of order that all of us seem to crave. Ease children back into a school year routine gradually. As the summer days wind down, put your kids on a schedule similar to the one they will have this fall. Gradually send them to bed earlier and begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, closer to the hour they will need to rise when school begins. Do not neglect to help your children readjust to mealtimes. Younger children, in particular, need to adapt to new meal routines before the school day demands it of them. Plan meals and snacks to accustom little ones to rituals of the school day before the school year begins.
Establish a morning routine.
Put an alarm clock in each school-aged child's bedroom and show your children how to use it. This will help your children get used to a regular sleep routine and help to make them more independent.
Have every capable family member make their bed; put away pyjamas; and tidy their bedrooms.
Make sure everyone eats breakfast including yourself! To keep things simple in the morning, you may want to offer cereal, frozen waffles, frozen pancakes, or even the leftovers from last night's meal.
After breakfast, have each family member set the dishes to soak in the sink or stack them in the dishwasher.
You may have to establish a "bathroom" schedule for your family so that everyone is ensured of proper time in front of the mirror.
Make sure everyone is dressed properly and has their lunches before they head out the door. Establish an evening routine This ritual may be best performed right before bedtime, but will prove helpful regardless of when you do it. . Ensure that complete outfits are ready for each family member.
Prepare lunches.
Sign any homework, forms, or permission slips that need signing.
Set out your breakfast materials as much as possible. Set the table, put dry cereal in bowls under a towel or tablecloth?anything you can do at night will save you a few precious minutes in the morning. You may also want to put child-friendly (light) pitchers of milk and juice in the fridge, so that your children can make their own cold-cereal breakfasts, freeing you for other things.
Set alarm clocks.
Bedtime is a great opportunity to make yourself available to your children emotionally and physically. Ask your child about his or her school day, and about future plans and goals. A neck rub for your tired athlete, for example, is a good way to hear about cheers, challenges and dilemmas.
Watch the weather report on the evening news and use the information to plan outerwear for the morning.
Put all items that will be taken to work or school the next morning into their respective cubbyholes. Replenish diaper bags and other supplies to ensure that everything is ready.
Make sure that all forms or permission slips receive your attention and place in your child's cubbyhole.
Give baths in the evening, if possible, when there is usually more hot water and more time.
Plan time each evening to prepare for the following day.
Assess each child's needs/supplies
Stay organized by assessing each child's back-to-school needs. Empty drawers and closets of outgrown or worn-out clothing, and either store or donate the discards.
Develop a needs analysis for each child, and check for possible hand-me-downs from older siblings. Make a list of what back-to-school supplies are needed including shoes, binders, organizers, pencils, file folders and tabs. Make a trip to the store together and involve your child in picking out his or her own supplies. This may help your child become excited about the school year and provide motivation for a successful school year.
SOLUTIONS ~ The Organizers' Newsletter ~ Spring 2006
Hi there and welcome to another issue of SOLUTIONS ~ The Organizers' Newsletter<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
Like yourself, our passion and joy is helping people bring order into their lives and seeing the difference that it makes for them in productivity, ease and satisfaction.
However, the concept of professional organizing is still new to most people. What response do you get when you tell people what you do? If you simply answer, "I am a Professional Organizer", chances are you may draw blank stares and looks of confusion. If your answer causes the topic of conversation to change you are likely making one of the common mistakes people make when telling others what they do. Here are some tips to help you transform that one question into an opportunity.
Make your response encouraging and specific. If I simply tell someone “I’m a professional organizer”, I reveal no details about who it is that I help or the benefits I provide my clients. Instead, I tell people, “I help small business owners and corporate clients become more organized using technology”. It is amazing how often I am asked, “Really? How do you do that?” When I get such a response, I know right away I’m one step closer to making a sale.
When trying to generate interest in what you do (which IS the purpose of telling someone what you do) avoid describing the details of becoming organized. People become interested in your service because they perceive it as something that will help them solve a problem or fill a need. By describing your process you detail mechanics, not benefits. Describe the results you provide and the types of clients you help and you will find yourself having more high energy conversations about what you do.
Here are a few examples to get you started…
I make so that my clien’s love coming home every night.
I simplify the lives of busy families to amplify their sense of control.
I generate smiles by turning piles into files.
You can dramatically improve your chances of generating new business by replacing your current answer with a compelling marketing message. A great marketing message speaks directly to your target market, clearly states the benefit of your product or service and most importantly, generates interest in what you do.
Even if you are not speaking with an ideal client, answering the “what-do-you-do” question with a compelling marketing message is a smart and perceptive tactic you can use to generate new business. There is always a chance that the person with whom you are speaking knows someone who can benefit from your services. By clearly stating the benefit you provide and describing your ideal client, you help you create the opportunity for people to associate you as a solution to a problem.
Take the time to develop a great answer to the question "What do you do?" and you will improve your ability to transform a common question into a valuable marketing opportunity. Business networking is when a group of like minded business people gather and help each other. If you check, you will surely find a networking group in your area. The networking group can meet as often as they wish, as is convenient for the participants.
Regrettably, most people start with a networking group by looking for immediate gains.... that is, for favorable results for themselves. If this is what you are trying to achieve, you are networking for the wrong reasons and will be sticking out like a sore thumb.
Many people think that the size of a networking group makes the difference in networking. When groups start falling in size, members will say, "we have to build up our numbers." Now, what numbers are they referring to? Is it the number of participants? I would rather belong to a networking group of two people who can help each other on a regular basis then have a large group of business people not following the Ten Commandments of Networking.
It is not the quantity, it is the quality.
"I haven't got any leads yet!" Well excuse me, have you given one, ever? Or, have you made a suggestion that might help a fellow member? Did you call anyone with a compliment and say, "Just wanted you to know, Jim, that your comments on the XYZ expansion was right on the money." One must be willing to put in time waiting also. It might take a while before people feel comfortable with offering you a referral.
Networking groups will come and go. To get the most out of your networking experience, you need to build a relationship with people who you want to have contact with. Not all members will be able to help you, nor will you be able to help them. That doesn't mean you should snub them! I still have strong relationships with my networking friends from groups that are long gone.
When networking, spend most of your time and effort on people who can help each other out, for the long term. That is right. This is a long term project. Countless times I have been to business networking events and have seen people actually run from person to person, with the expectations of first giving away their card and hoping to gather the other person's. How can you possibly build a relationship with a person when your objective is to get out there, and collect cards? Some networking groups make a game out of it to see who can collect the most in a certain time. What a waste of business cards!
You will find that a highly effective networker will "work the net". What I mean is that they will go into a function with a goal in mind. My usual goal when business networking is to have the expectation that I will "meet" and "understand" only three people per event. I know what kind of person that I can help and expect that this person will be able to do the same for me. A win/win situation is what I am talking about. The highly effective networker will take the time to cultivate a rapport.
After the business networking event is when the real work begins. After all, you are only at the networking event to meet and build rapport. Follow up ASAP. Now is the time to send a nice customized card, and call a few days after to arrange a time to meet for a coffee or to have lunch. This isn't the case with a business - the more times your small business is mentioned in the newspapers, the better, as long as the publicity is positive.
Positive publicity translates into more customers and increased sales; it's truly money in the bank. If you have the appropriate facilities, this can be a great way of drawing new business and getting your business featured in the newspapers.
There are all kinds of ways that you can bring your business to the attention of the community, but positive publicity is one of the most valuable. If you don't have time to generate positive publicity about your business yourself, you may want to hire a public relations firm.
As long as I can remember, I have always looked for ideas and better ways to keep things organized and to do things more efficiently. I can't imagine living in any other manner. Prior to starting my organizing business, I held senior level administrative positions where keeping others organized was an integral part of my job. After reviewing a list of my strengths and weaknesses, it became quite evident that my ability to thoroughly understand the processes and challenges of disorganization and procrastination would play a major role in my new company.
Did you have a formal business plan when you first started your organizing business?
No, I did not write a formal business plan when I first started out and that is one of the things that I regret. However, as with many other brand new organizing businesses, my plan would have changed continuously since the start of my business... and it would have been nice to have a blueprint.
My organizing business has gone in entirely new directions and has opened up many new opportunities. Although I did have some very clear goals at the beginning, there is no way that I could have planned the scope of my business today. I could never have imagined communicating with thousands of organizers throughout the world ~ I could never imagined the thrill of sharing with like-minded individuals ~ those that share the same values ~ those that share the same dreams! And after having been in business four years, I could never have imagined the success that I have enjoyed.
Could you describe your typical work day
This work is so varied as a new organizer, that I am not sure there is a typical work day. In the earlier stages of my business, one day would find me working with a homemaker putting a child's room or kitchen in order, while another day I may be organizing a filing system for a small business. I usually wake up by 5:00 a.m., browse at e-mail, complete my work-out session and shower by 6:30. Then I spend time responding to e-mail as well as working on our web site. (I find the web so much faster early in the morning).I try to schedule two three-hour client visits per day ~ one at 9:00 a.m. and the second at 1:00 p.m. If feasible, I also book an Initial Consultation outside these time frames along my route. I find that clients are only at their best for periods of no more than three hours in length. The decision making process tends to drain them physically. (I also find that I need a rest ~ or a change ~ after three hours).
What is the best way to get in touch with you?
As many that know me can attest, I am not an night owl ~ in fact, the very opposite. I get up before the birds sometimes ~ but there's a down side ~ once they have played the music for final Jeopardy ~ which is 7:55 p.m. here ~ my mind and body are already retiring for the evening.
Occasionally I will need to attend an evening function ~ and once in a while my family can amuse me so that I stay up later ~ but for the most part, all communication with the outside world ceases and e-mails are returned in the early morning hours.The best way to get in touch with us would be to either leave a voicemail message at our offices (1-8888-739-9965) or write an e-mail to Debra@ProfessionalOrganizers.com and we will contact you within 24 hours.
What do you find to be the most exciting part of your business?
It is so rewarding to see the expressions on our client's faces I love that sense of accomplishment that we have literally changed a person's life. It's also a wonderful feeling to hear that our name has been passed along to a friend or colleague because they know that we would be able to help fill a need! Word-of-mouth advertising will play a huge role in determining an organizer's success ~ and it's also a true measure as to how well you are doing!
What do you find to be the most frustrating part of your business?
Those clients who recognize their need to get organized, but are not motivated or self-disciplined enough to start or stick with a system.
Every person interested in entering the professional organizing field is wondering "Can I earn a living doing this?" Is it possible?
You certainly can make a living as a Professional Organizer. I firmly believe that one can do anything they put their mind to. Having said that, there is a definite need for Professional Organizers, and if you are good at what you do and take the necessary steps to market your business, you will be in demand on referrals alone. However, even though you are organized, you will need to understand the basics of owning and operating your own organizing business.
Do you have any tips or advice for new organizers?
Always have an open mind for new areas of your profession. Just because you start out doing personal organizing sessions, does not mean that you are limited to doing just that. There are many opportunities to share your knowledge in articles, books, cassettes and public speaking. The possibilities are truly endless. Educate yourself, join at least one networking group, and perhaps offer your services to acquaintances for free so that you gain experience! (Don't forget to take before and after pictures.) Most of all ~ have fun!
Always do something that you love and it will be fulfilling financially and spiritually.
Debra
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Professional Organizer?
A Professional Organizer is a consultant who provides structure, solutions and systems to increase productivity and reduce stress. Professional Organizers help others restore order to their lives creating systems and helping them form new habits that enable them to live and work in a peaceful, non-chaotic environment.The field of professional organizing has existed since 1985. Today there are over three thousand members of the National Association for Professional Organizers (NAPO) and over three hundred members of Professional Organizers in Canada (POC).The need for this service industry has come about as lifestyles have become increasingly more complex, filled with more information, responsibilities, work and possessions. (Please see next post for IAPO's definition.)
How do I decide if being a Professional Organizer is the right for me?
Many successful professional organizers are individuals who have a natural ability to create systems and order and have a passion for organizing.
* If what you have learned about this profession so far is exciting to you
* If you have great organizational skills
* If you genuinely love being of service
* If you love to learn
* If you love being a resource for people
* If you want to create a company of your own visioning ~ one where you'll do work you love
~ chances are, becoming a Professional Organizer is right for you.
What qualities do I need to run a successful Professional Organizing business?
Successful Professional Organizers...
* Have the magic ~ open ears, engaged minds and ready hearts.
* Have the touch and are able to simplify processes and practice good work ethics.
* Are always open and adaptable to new ideas and willing to learn new things.
* Are quick ~ no matter what it is, they're able to pick up the ball and run with it.
* Are intuitive ~ they listen well and can understand what's really being said.
* Are proactive ~ they can identify problems and recommend solutions.
* Are confident ~ they trust their intuition and are extremely self-assured.
* Are committed ~ they remain focused, driven and passionate.
Successful Professional Organizers are dedicated, driven, masterfully organized professionals who genuinely want to positively impact the lives of people they work with.
Can I do this business on a part-time basis?
You can structure your business any way you like. The beauty of owning your own business means that you can operate it as you wish. It's your business. You set your own hours, and if you only have one day a week, or evenings and weekends only, then yes, you can operate your organizing business on a part-time basis.!Many new organizers keep their full-time job, and work part-time to build a business until the income generated is at least at par with the income earned at their full-time job.
Do I have to join an association to become a Professional Organizer?
As with other small and home-based businesses, we would strongly advise that you join one or more associations or organizations where you can network with other entrepreneurs and potential clients. We also recommend that a new PO (Professional Organizer) should consider the following organizations dedicated to promoting and supporting the field of professional organizing.
NAPO - National Association of Professional Organizers
POC - Professional Organizers in Canada
NSGCD - National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization
In addition to the above, we would also suggest that you join local small business associations such as your Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trade or other similar groups.
What are the costs involved when starting an organizing business?
That depends entirely on your budget and your desire to learn and to be involved with the many training and networking opportunities available. Since there is absolutely no need to take on office space other than your home office, you do not have to worry about rent. (Clients will not be visiting you at your office anyway).
If you wish to join networking associations, such as NAPO, POC, your local Chamber of Commerce or Board of Trade, your annual fees need to be considered. Assuming that you already own a computer and printer, business cards, brochures and other materials can be printed from your own office or handled professionally.
Some organizers hire the services of a bookkeeper, while others perform their own accounting duties.
Can one earn a living as a Professional Organizer?
Although there are many variables such as one's determination, marketing ability and location ~ the answer is yes, most definitely. As life becomes more and more hectic, busy individuals need your help ~ and they're willing to pay for it.
What can I expect to earn as a Professional Organizer?
Generally speaking, your geographic location, experience and skill sets will dictate your fees. However, a new PO with great skills and great training can expect to earn $30+ per hour in the residential market and upwards of $50+ per hour in the corporate market. A Professional Organizer with an established reputation can earn much more ($90 - $150 per hour) depending on the types of projects.Keep in mind that many hours of your time will not be billable time as many hours will be spent working on the administrative and sales side of the business.
How long does it take to build a business as a Professional Organizer?
A lot depends on the time you have to invest. If your plan is to launch into this and work at it full-time, you could have a thriving business in a matter of months. If you plan to work part-time, and you have less time to invest in marketing your services, it will more than likely take longer.Traditional business wisdom tells us that it takes an average small business owner two to five years to build a business. It could take you that long, and you need to be ready for that reality ~ however, due to the high demand in this relatively new industry, most Professional Organizers do it in far less time.
What does a client expect from a Professional Organizer?
A client will expect an organizer to be competent in his/her specialized area, to be honest, to be responsible, to stand behind his/her work, and to maintain confidentiality. It is important for a PO to discuss with a client what he/she expects and for the client to be aware of what a PO can provide.
What kind of specialties are there?
While the possibilities are endless, specialties include...
* residential organizing
* office organizing
* personal productivity
* event planning
* relocation or move assistance
* financial organizing
* seminars and workshops
* computer training and organizing
* memorabilia and scrapbooking
* project management
* space planning
* time management
......and so much more!
How does one become a Professional Organizer?
You have great organizational skills. You're sure of it. You've been like this for years and the idea of having your own business, using your talents and doing work you love is infinitely appealing.
Most new PO's become aware of the field of professional organizing from magazine or newspaper articles or from seeing a featured organizer on television. Then many go searching for further information on the internet aware that they have been blessed with natural skills and organizational abilities, yet perhaps unsure how to start a new business as a Professional Organizer. That is where a comprehensive training program comes in...
The Comprehensive Training Program is designed to add to your existing skill sets and teach you how to develop a viable and thriving business. If My Work is Good Enough I Shouldn't Have to Market, Right? By Kelly O'Brien
If my work is good enough, don't you think that good work should speak for itself...that if you're good enough at what you do, you shouldn't have to hustle up business?
I've been working with a lot of really smart people lately. Physicists, Economists, Chemists, Electrical Engineers, Programmers, Researchers and highly educated professionals of many kinds. These folks are at the top of their game and world-class contributors in their chosen field.
Here are some of things they've said to me about marketing:
"If you're good, the money will come; we're above the money game."
"Isn't there an implied value to what we do? Why do we have to market it?"
"Yes, I'm angry that I have to market. It's not why I chose this career."
If you can relate to any of these statements, you're not alone
To view this article in its entirety, please click here
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3. The Top 10 Ways to Market your Business without Advertising by Philip E. Humbert

Every business and professional practice MUST be in the public eye. You need customers! Folks need your goods and services -- it's a mutual alliance for mutual benefit!

But if potential clients and customers don't know you exist, or can't find you, you will go bankrupt! They won't benefit from your services, and you won't make any money.

So, marketing is a necessity. Advertising is one form of marketing, but it's terribly expensive. Here are the Top 10 alternatives:

To view this article in its entirety, please click here

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6. Hard Yes or Easy Yes? by Robert Middleton
What's worse than nobody showing interest in your services?
Getting a lot of people initially interested in your services and then failing to get them to say yes to buying your services. In other words, your marketing is working but your selling isn't.
One of the assertions I've heard over and over again from clients was, "If I could just get in front of a qualified prospect, I could easily sell them on my services."
But my observation is that this is far from the truth. Independent Professionals are notoriously poor at getting the prospect to say yes, even if they are qualified, interested and have the money.
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
To view this article in its entirety, please click here
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

All the best in organizing and we wish you much success in your business.

Sincerely,

Debra

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What would you do if you knew that you could not fail?
~ Robert Schuller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

7.
